Through many years of building dulcimers, we have focused a lot of attention and research on our strings. We have carefully balanced the string gauges and materials across each instrument for best tone and tension, providing a comfortable and consistent resiliency. This is a subtle detail that gives our instruments a pleasing “feel” under your hammers as well as a balanced and even tone. We use plain steel, phosphor bronze, phosphor bronze wrapped, and steel wrapped. We use two loop-end strings per course.
We sell strings to fit our hammered dulcimers in three quantities, described below. Current string prices are listed on our hammered dulcimer price list page. To order strings from us by mail or fax, please download our hammered dulcimer string order form.
Full sets — these contain one of each string used on the hammered dulcimer, allowing you to replace all of your strings at once.
Spare string kits — these partial sets contain 1-3 strings of each gauge used on the dulcimer. These kits will provide a replacement if you break a string, but do not contain enough strings to restring the whole instrument.
